Quantum technologies

A new generation of quantum technologies has moved beyond simply exploiting naturally occurring quantum effects. They are now driving and enabling a new generation of hitherto impossible devices and systems from breathtakingly powerful medical imaging devices to entirely new methods of computing to solve currently intractable problems – all made possible by the engineering of quantum effects into next-generation technologies.

Overview of programme

In the Autumn Statement 2013 the UK government announced an investment of £270m over five years into a National Quantum Technologies Programme to get quantum technology out of laboratories and into the marketplace, to boost British business and make a real difference to our everyday lives.


The UK National Quantum Technologies Programme aims to ensure the successful transition of quantum technologies from laboratory to industry. The programme is delivered by EPSRC, Innovate UK, STFC, BEIS, NPL, GCHQ, Dstl and the KTN.


£120 million investment in four hubs that will explore the properties of quantum mechanics and how they can be harnessed for use in technology.
